Prepare in advance
Universities may only have a limited number of places available and these can go quickly, so having a clear idea of what you're looking for can help you feel more prepared.
Before results day, you could:
- look at courses you may be interested in;
- keep a shortlist of options;
- make a note of questions you want to ask;
- check any key dates.
Stay flexible and open-minded
You may need to consider courses or universities that were not part of your original plan.
It can help to look at similar course titles or subject areas, based on your interests, career goals and entry requirements.
You may want to think about:
- similar subjects or degree titles;
- your interests and strengths;
- entry requirements;
- future career ideas;
- what's most important to you in a course or university.
Get ready and contact universities
On results day, things can move quickly, so it helps to have the key information ready, including:
- your UCAS ID number;
- your exam results (including GCSEs if relevant);
- your contact details (email and phone number);
- notes on courses you're interested in;
- questions you want to ask.
Contacting universities
You may need to speak to admissions teams directly. If you do, remember that they're there to help.
Before you call:
- find a quiet place to talk;
- charge your phone;
- have your notes ready;
- make sure you know your results;
- be clear about the course you are asking about.
Making your decision
If you receive an offer through Clearing, try to give yourself time to think it through.
You may want to consider:
- course content;
- location;
- accommodation;
- university facilities;
- available support;
- what feels right for you.
Choosing the right course for you is what matters most and Clearing is one route to finding it.
Contextual Clearing offers are reduced grade requirements made available through Clearing for eligible students (UK applicants only). These offers recognise that some students may have experienced barriers in their education.
For courses where contextual offers are available, you'll be asked to provide your UK home postcode when you enquire. Some courses offer lower entry requirements to students from areas with historically lower progression to higher education and we use postcode information to check eligibility for these offers.
Learn more about contextual offers and check student eligibility.
You should also let the Clearing call handler know if you:
- have been in care for more than three months, or
- have been granted refugee status by the UK government, including if you've been issued a visa under one of the Ukrainian schemes.
Students in these circumstances may also be eligible for a contextual Clearing offer.
As a global university, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds who have the potential to succeed with us. UK applicants are not in direct competition with international applicants, as the University sets separate place targets for each group. This helps ensure our student community reflects our position as a truly international university.
As a result, some courses may be full for one group but still have places available for the other. This means that, through Clearing, some courses may have places available only to UK applicants or only to international applicants.
International students must meet the same rigorous entry requirements as UK students for admission to our degree programmes. Applications from both UK and international students are treated equally at every stage of the admissions process. Our recruitment approach is fair, robust and competitive, regardless of an applicant’s fee status.
Students appealing their grades while exploring Clearing options should be aware that universities can only consider achieved and verified grades at the point of application. Universities cannot hold places while you await the outcome of an appeal.
At Manchester, Clearing offers can only be made if you have already achieved the required grades and can be formally verified.
If you receive a positive appeal outcome, you should:
- check our Clearing course listings to see whether your course of interest is open; and
- follow the Clearing application instructions on our website at that time.
Course availability can change quickly during Clearing, so we encourage you to check listings regularly once your appeal outcome is confirmed.
